This year has been full of trials and hard times. Mom's cancer & Scott's back problems (you can read about it below in a post Scott's summer of discontent & a post Scott's back surgery) seemed to consume most of the year. My brother & sister got divorces and that was hard. There were other things too that I won't mention - but I think you get my point that it was an especially hard year for me and my family. Because of Scott not being able to work with his back we were not able to spend nearly what we do for Christmas this year. The kids all knew this and understood.
Throughout the Christmas Season someone gave envelopes with money to our Bishop to give to us. This helped us so much and was so appreciated. This really warmed our hearts.
On Christmas Eve a Secret Santa left us a box full of presents for my family. We just brought it inside and didn't even look through it until we handed the gifts to the kids on Christmas day. We were very touched by this act of kindness towards my family. I cried tears of gratitude most of the day & as I write this am in tears again. This Secret Santa not only got gifts for my family but each gift to us was perfect and went with what we love. Gift cards to our favorite places, clothes & shoes that were the perfect size, DVD's that were our favorites.... The list could go on. They even bought gifts for Sean & Lucy. It made our Christmas very special and the kids appreciated this so much. I am sure this Secret Santa family knows us very well to have gotten us all the perfect gifts and I hope they will read this and know just how much we felt loved and special that Christmas Day. I was talking to Scott later in the day and said that after the hard year we had, it seemed to make things so much better. THANK YOU Secret Santa's. You have touched our lives forever and we will never forget this Christmas.

My Mom
Christmas at Nana & Papas
Christmas Day
We started out Christmas day with a breakfast. Opened gifts & headed to church at 10:30. It was a wonderful meeting. Because Christmas was on a Sunday we just had Sacrament meeting. All Nellie was telling people & Santa that she wanted for Christmas was a pink iPad & a pockadotted puppy. We were shopping before Christmas & she was with me & spotted a black & white pockadotted puppy with a red bow. She was not going to let me leave without buying it. haha. I got her a Leap Frog Leapster for her iPad and she loves it. We call it her iPad. Kristen has an iPad and she loves to play on it with her. Tyson was very happy to get a Christmas present of basketball games going on all day. He is a super huge Phoenix Suns fan, but loves to watch all teams play. It was a very special Christmas. I love to watch the kids open their gifts and get excited.
Christmas Decorations
I LOVE my Christmas decorations. Most of them I have had for over 25 years. I looked on ebay to find another bear stocking for Sean and they are calling my first stockings I had "vintage". That's ok I love antique stuff. :) I collect nativities and love getting new ones every year. I have friends & my sister Bonnie that give me them for Christmas. My daughter Courtney got me the one in left top corner this year. I LOVE it! I think I am going to have to have Scott make me a bigger shelf for them because I am out of room. I also love my newest outside decoration - Frosty. Haley is pretending to build him. My friend Cristy made me the one in the top right corner this year. So cute. I also love our Christmas tree and the kids always have fun decorating is every year because of the old ornaments that have pictures on them. I have to admit I don't look forward to putting them away each year. It takes me forever to get them up and I don't like having to put them away.

Scotts Summer of Discontent

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 My summer of discontent
We've all heard that trials in our lives are, or can be, blessings in disguise. I know that blessings can be trials in disguise. (Parents, can I get an AMEN?)
This year I had a particularly difficult trial that I'd like to share. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the lessons therein.
Through the summer I had been coping with lower back pain. I had a lot of soreness, stiffness, etc. It was pretty bad at times, and not so bad others. During a week of vacation time while Julie was at Education Week my back was quite sore,(enough to keep me from accomplishing much) and I was having some pain in my right leg. It was enough to be bothersome, but it was only when I was sitting or driving. (Oh yeah, I drive for a living.) The following week, the game completely changed!
On my 2nd night back to work the pain was bad enough that I left work early. Once at home I was walking around, doing things just fine. It still only hurt when I sat. When I awoke the next morning and put my feet on the floor, the closest I can come to describing what I felt would be lightning streaking down the back of my right leg. I fell to the floor and crawled to the bathroom.
I had heard of Sciatica before, but never realized how debilitating it can be. For the next 4 days I only left my recliner to use the bathroom, and had to crawl to do that. I actually chose to go thirsty and hungry in order to reduce the need for those trips. After a few days I was able to stand, stooped way over, to walk very short distances. (50 feet) But it was excruciating to do so.
I was diagnosed with a significantly herniated disc (10mm) that was pinching my Sciatic nerve root. I was advised that the preferred treatment was a combination of pain management, muscle relaxers, therapy, and time. I was prescribed Percocet (narcotic), starting seeing a chiropractor 3 times a week, and began getting epidural steroid injections. This course of treatment would prove ineffective and after 8 weeks I was given a test to check for nerve damage. That test is called an EMG, and would fit right in a torture chamber. It indicated nerve damage and on Oct. 5 I was referred to a neurosurgeon. Every surgeon I called was scheduling new patients for late November to January. (Can you imagine, I would STILL be waiting) Through what I am convinced was Divine Intervention, I was able to schedule an initial consultation for October 18.
During this timeline, much more happened that made this an experience I will never forget, and hope to never repeat.
Percocet contains a high level of acetaminophen, which is hard on the liver. I have a history of high liver functions, and was therefore concerned. About 5 weeks into the ordeal I began feeling 'yucky'. It got steadily worse until I was feeling quite sick much of the time which made the overall experience much worse. On Sunday October 16, while at church, I was not only feeling sick, but experiencing a lot of anxiety and restlessness. I had literally been poisoning myself. It seemed like things were closing in around me and I ended up having an emotional breakdown in the clerk's office while getting a blessing from my bishop and High Priest Group leader.
I decided to stop taking the pain medication, knowing the pain would be intense. What my doctor had failed to inform me of is that even when using narcotics responsibly, which I had been, there would be withdrawal symptoms if quit. For the next 72 hours I had all the pain of the pinched Sciatic nerve, the sickness from the drugs, AND the withdrawal symptoms from having quit cold turkey. I only slept about 3 hours total in that time. The withdrawals made it nearly impossible to remain still and the injury of course made moving around very painful. Those long sleepless nights were the darkest times I can recall. I cried, literally, to the Lord like never before.
I saw the surgeon and he agreed to operate. He had 2 open times in his schedule. One was only 6 days away, and the other would have been month later. Fortunately I was able to get all the pre-operative requirements done in time to schedule for the first one. I had surgery on October 24th that has, so far, been successful.
I've come to believe that it was no accident that all those different factors converged to bring me to rock bottom when they did. I know the Lord's hand was in it. I've spent hours contemplating what I was supposed to learn from this and praying that it wouldn't be lost on me. I have some ideas and feelings with which I'm still wrestling. I also have a strong feeling that there will be an event or experience later on that will offer understanding and clarity.
I know I will be more compassionate to others' suffering. That's a good thing.

Family Pictures Dec 2011
Love these kids! Tyson & Lucy, Brandi, Courtney & Sean, Kristen, Sydney, Haley, Nellie & Lucy

Family Pictures! Trying to find matching clothes, picking a day we can all be there on & getting everyone there & happy is a hard thing to do. :) My sister Sherry took our pictures this year. I found a spot not too far from home. It was a rainy week (rare for Arizona) and started to rain a little when we first got there - just for a minute or two, but stopped for us to have our pictures taken.

Temple Lights
We went to the Temple lights with some friends - Hal, Cristy & Seth Steinbeigle. We went to Petes fish & chips first. Nellie loves Hal. Probably because he will do anything, no matter how crazy, that she tells him to. Haha. We always love to see the Temple lights.

Holiday Express
Every year the Special Needs kids get treated to a "Holiday Express" bus ride to see the Christmas lights around the area. After they drive you around seeing lights you get to come back for cookies & hot chocolate & a visit with Santa. This was our first year doing this. They had a lot of buses going. Nellie was so nervous at first, but had fun when she realized there was nothing to be scared of. I get car sick easy and our bus driver was a first timer for this event so he got a little lost and about 15 minutes into the adventure I got sick. I was joking to Haley but was a little serious that I might have to puke in the hood of her jacket. :) Was so glad to get off the bus that I wanted to kiss the ground. haha. We did see a few houses that had really cool lights on them. It was cute to see Nellie with Santa. She of course told him that she wanted an iPad and a pockadotted puppy. Kristen has an iPad and she loves to play on it with her.

Haley's 14th Birthday
Haley turned 14. For our girls that is a fun birthday because they get to start wearing makeup. We went to the movies for Haley's birthday - her friend Miranda came with us. We saw Hugo. We took her out of school for lunch and went to one of our favorite places, Elmers. Her favorite cake is a chocolate one that I used to buy at Costcos, but recently found it at Albertsons which is close to our house so that was good. Haley had grown so much this year all her pants are high-waters so she wanted clothes for her birthday and of course makeup.
